The Balearic Islands’ Department of Health has carried out a special flu vaccination initiative during the final parliamentary session of the year. A vaccination team made up of three primary care nurses visited the Parliament early in the morning to offer immunisation to members of Parliament, government officials, advisers and journalists who regularly attend the plenary sessions.
The vaccination campaign took place between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., allowing all participants in the session to receive the vaccine voluntarily. The President of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, joined the initiative at around 11:00 a.m., setting an example and encouraging both her colleagues and the general public to get vaccinated.
A total of 67 people were vaccinated during this exceptional on-site campaign at the Parliament.

Balearic Health Department brings flu vaccination to Parliament’s final plenary session. Seasonal flu on the rise: vaccination and preventive measures
The Department of Health once again highlights that vaccination remains the most effective protection against seasonal flu, particularly in light of the recent rise in cases. According to the Regional Committee on Infectious Diseases, the Balearic Islands remain in an upward phase of the flu epidemic.
During week 49 of the year (from 1 to 7 December), 65 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded, compared to 37.3 cases per 100,000 the previous week. Health authorities therefore recommend reinforcing preventive measures, including wearing surgical masks when experiencing symptoms, limiting social interactions, and maintaining proper respiratory and hand hygiene—especially when in contact with vulnerable individuals.
Mask use is strongly advised when visiting hospitals, health centres, care homes, public transport and crowded indoor spaces.
Current data also indicate that during the 2025–2026 flu season, virus circulation has started around four weeks earlier than usual, making it likely that the epidemic peak may occur during the Christmas period. As a result, early vaccination is strongly encouraged.
To prepare for a potential increase in hospital admissions and emergency visits, the Balearic Health Service has activated a contingency plan that includes the availability of 215 additional hospital beds and close coordination between hospitals, primary care services and the SAMU 061 emergency service.
