Seasonal flu cases in the Balearic Islands have risen slightly, reaching 75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants during week 50 of the year (December 8–14). This represents a mild increase compared with the previous week’s 65 cases, although the region remains in a low-intensity epidemic phase.

The Balearic Islands continue under Scenario I of the Protocol of Recommendations for the Control of Infectious Diseases, established by the Spanish Ministry of Health and regional Public Health authorities. This framework defines four risk levels based on incidence rates and outlines the measures to be implemented according to each scenario. Current recommendations include wearing masks when experiencing respiratory symptoms and using them in high-risk or high-traffic environments.

Given the rise in cases, the regional Ministry of Health reiterates the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu, especially at the onset of the epidemic phase. The viruses circulating most frequently at the moment are subtypes of influenza A (55 %) and influenza B.

Incidence rates differ across the islands:

  • Ibiza has the highest rate with 103.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
  • Menorca reports 75.3.
  • Mallorca stands at 70.8.
  • Formentera remains lower at 25.9.

Hospital contingency plan

To prepare for a potential increase in hospital admissions, the Balearic Health Service has activated a contingency plan allowing for the deployment of up to 215 additional hospital beds to manage the seasonal surge in respiratory infections.

Recent measures include:

  • Son Espases University Hospital opening 8 extra beds.
  • Son Llàtzer University Hospital activating 24 additional beds on December 9 and hiring 11 nurses and 7 nursing assistants.
  • Sant Joan de Déu Hospitals in Palma and Inca will add 25 beds in total on December 29, under the current collaborative agreement.
