On Saturday, 20 December, the exhibition “Marino Benejam. Portrait of a Discreet Genius” was officially opened at Can Saura. The show, part of the commemorative events for the Marino Benejam Year, highlights the work and legacy of one of Menorca’s most notable creators. Curated by Empàtic, the exhibition immerses visitors in the artist’s creative universe, showcasing his talent, sensitivity and characteristic modesty.
Marino Benejam Ferrer (1890–1975), born in Ciutadella, discovered his passion for drawing at a young age. After moving with his family to Barcelona, he began publishing in children’s magazines such as Pocholo, Perra Gorda and KKO. In 1934, he joined the team of TBO, where he would become one of the most influential illustrators of Spanish humorous comics.

His most iconic creation, La Familia Ulises, was published continuously from 1944 until he died in 1975, portraying everyday middle-class life with humour and warmth. Other works featured in the exhibition include Melitón Pérez, Eustaquio Morcillón y Babalí and Los grandes inventos del TBO.
Benejam’s style is defined by clean lines, expressive simplicity and rounded shapes that give his characters a friendly presence. His ability to merge visual gags with witty dialogue helped shape the identity of Spanish comic art and inspired countless readers and artists.
During the opening ceremony, President Adolfo Vilafranca emphasised the significance of the exhibition within the Marino Benejam commemorations and stressed the importance of preserving and sharing the artist’s legacy with the people of Menorca.
The exhibition will remain in Can Saura until 28 February and will later move to the Sant Antoni Cultural Hall in Maó, where it will be open from 20 March to 2 May 2026.
