The Minister for Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, and the rector of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), Jaume Carot, have signed a new cooperation agreement ensuring the continuity of the enrichment programmes ESTALMAT and MENTORiment, aimed at students with high intellectual abilities across the Balearic Islands.

The agreement will remain in force for four years and includes a total contribution of €216,800, representing a 27.5% increase compared to the previous funding. This financial boost will expand the number of mentorships, increase student participation, and guarantee balanced implementation throughout Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Education and the UIB strengthen gifted-education programmes with a new agreement

Both programmes, run by the UIB, are well-established initiatives that foster talent development, creativity, and advanced learning through activities outside the regular classroom environment.

MENTORiment offers workshops and mentorships for students in lower and upper secondary education, enabling them to explore subjects of interest and engage with other talented peers. Last year, 350 students took part: 254 from Mallorca, 44 from Menorca, 51 from Ibiza and 1 from Formentera.

Meanwhile, ESTALMAT targets students aged 12 and 13 who show exceptional aptitude in mathematics, aiming to further strengthen their abilities.

In total, 365 students benefit each year from these programmes—350 through MENTORiment and 15 through ESTALMAT.
With this agreement, the Ministry and the UIB reaffirm their joint commitment to providing specialised, equitable and high-quality educational responses for students with high intellectual abilities, contributing to a more inclusive and excellence-driven education system in the Balearic Islands.
