The Menorca Waste and Energy Consortium has signed a contract with ALQUI-ENVAS SL for the purchase of four mobile recycling units, with a total value of €150,780 (excluding VAT). These new units form part of a project designed to improve waste separation across the island and are co-funded through the Next Generation EU programme, which covers around 78% of the total cost.

The mobile modules—built in the style of maritime containers and equipped with an upper hook to ease transport—will be installed in accessible locations in towns and residential areas, following a schedule coordinated with local councils. Delivery of the equipment is expected in April 2026, after which the service will be launched.

Menorca acquires four mobile recycling points to bring waste separation closer to residents

The Consortium aims to make waste separation more accessible by offering 24-hour collection points that complement Menorca’s existing network of seven fixed recycling centres. This addition will help expand coverage, improve selective waste collection, support recycling in areas without nearby facilities and strengthen public awareness on proper waste management.

Each municipality will decide the exact locations and how long each unit remains in place, with a minimum stay of two days. The mobile points will not accept the five standard household waste fractions—glass, paper/cardboard, packaging, organic and residual waste—already managed by municipal services. Instead, they will focus on specific materials such as batteries, small appliances, light bulbs, used cooking oil, clothing, coffee capsules, toner cartridges, paints, solvents and other special waste.

The Minister of Environment and president of the Consortium, Simón Gornés, stressed that these mobile units will “bring the service closer to all residents, especially those in areas without recycling facilities,” highlighting that improving access to recycling is essential to advancing Menorca’s environmental and waste-management goals.
