Spain will host a second AI Factory, following the European Commission’s decision to award the country a new advanced AI infrastructure to be located at the Galician Supercomputing Centre (CESGA). This facility will complement the existing one at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre – National Supercomputing Centre (BSC-CNS).

The project involves a total investment of €82 million, with €24 million provided by the Spanish Government through the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. CESGA is jointly promoted by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Regional Government of Galicia.

With this second facility, Spain becomes one of only three EU countries —alongside Germany and Poland— to host two AI Factories. The new centre, named 1HealthAI, will incorporate a specialised AI supercomputer and an advanced computing platform tailored to experimental and applied artificial intelligence.

The infrastructure will also provide free support services for companies, research centres, SMEs and startups, fostering talent, innovation and competitiveness in sectors such as biotechnology, health research and life sciences.

Spain’s first AI Factory

The first Spanish AI Factory at BSC-CNS was approved by the European Commission the previous December as one of the initial seven facilities launched under the EU programme. Its goal is to democratise access to high-performance computing so that businesses and startups can benefit from resources traditionally reserved for researchers.

The centre has already begun offering services and will soon be fully operational, further strengthening Spain’s leadership in artificial intelligence.
