Agriculture allocates €1.2 million to boost local products and strengthen food chain controls at the sector’s request
According to the figures presented, €1,166,372.73 has been allocated this year to local product promotion. Over €600,000 was directed to the domestic market: fairs, established events, seasonal consumption campaigns and the launch of the Local Product Voucher campaign, which encouraged purchases and improved visibility of Balearic products at points of sale.
Minister Joan Simonet highlighted that «the primary sector only has a future if it is profitable, and to be profitable it must sell. That is why these promotional policies are not merely decorative, but a key tool to ensure that farmers, livestock breeders and fishers can make a dignified living from their work».
The 2025 Christmas campaign, developed in a transmedia format, was also presented.
Another major focus has been the consolidation of the Local Product logo. It was introduced together with its identity manual and shared in informational sessions in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. This emblem has become essential for consumers to clearly identify agri-food products originating from the Islands.
In parallel, the results of food chain controls and checks on products from third countries were presented. According to director-general Joan Llabrés, this line of work «responds directly to a request from the sector, which called for greater transparency, fairness and action against unfair competition».
Regarding imports, 12 products were investigated in 2025, with proposed sanctions in 7 cases and goods seized in 3. Products inspected included dried fruit, wines, sweets, teas, vegetable oils, meat and horticultural goods from China, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Tunisia. In the case of Brazilian limes, unauthorised substances in the EU, such as chlorfenapyr and malathion, were detected.
Llabrés stressed that «strengthening controls is not just an administrative matter but a tool to protect our producers, ensure fair competition and safeguard the profitability of local farms».
Presence at fairs in 2026
The Ministry also outlined its main priorities for 2026, including reinforcing the presence of Balearic products at national and international fairs such as Barcelona Wine Week, Wine Paris, Alimentaria, Salón Gourmets, FITUR and ITB Berlin.
Minister Simonet emphasised that «this presence is not merely about visibility; it is a direct strategy to help the sector increase and improve its sales».
At the territorial level, new editions of HORECA Mallorca, the III Local Product Fair during Balearic Islands Day, the II Direct Sales Fair and a IV Local Product Fair in new locations will be promoted. Additional actions include B2B projects in several European markets, seasonal campaigns, the creation of a unified Local Product website and training programmes for producers and educational institutions.
