The Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, together with the Secretary for Educational Development, Mateu Suñer, met today with the management team of IES Mossèn Alcover and representatives of the Manacor City Council to outline the plan to implement the Integrated Studies Programme (PEI) at the school starting in the 2026–2027 academic year. The initiative aims to bring this educational pathway closer to students in the Llevant area who wish to combine secondary or upper-secondary studies with professional artistic training in music.

Currently, this type of programme is only available in Mallorca at the Professional Conservatory of Music and Dance in Palma. Vera highlighted that the proximity of IES Mossèn Alcover to the Municipal Conservatory of Music of Manacor, along with its strong Arts Baccalaureate offering, makes it an ideal candidate for hosting the PEI. These conditions ensure that all subjects eligible for recognition within professional artistic studies can be delivered effectively in a supportive environment for artistically inclined students.

Education begins procedures to introduce the Integrated Studies Programme at IES Mossèn Alcover in Manacor

To assess the level of interest, the Ministry is surveying students of the Manacor Conservatory, CEIPIEEM Simó Ballester, and various recognised music schools in Montuïri, Vilafranca, Petra, Sant Llorenç, Artà, Capdepera and Manacor. Although the survey remains open, early results show a strong response from students and families.

The implementation of the programme requires a cooperation agreement between the Ministry and Manacor City Council, owner of the Municipal Conservatory, to ensure proper organisation and coordination.

This initiative continues the approach started in Eivissa, where the same programme was launched at the Professional Conservatory of Music and Dance. Yesterday, Minister Vera visited the first cohort of 21 students enrolled in the new programme and confirmed its positive reception.

With the introduction of the PEI in Manacor, the Ministry reinforces its commitment to expanding educational options tailored to young people with artistic talent and supporting their professional development across the Balearic Islands.

Need for a new school site in Porto Cristo

Earlier in the day, Minister Vera and the Secretary for Educational Development visited CEIP Mitjà de Mar in Porto Cristo to review planned repairs to the skylight and emergency staircase, which is currently closed off due to lack of maintenance. The Ministry has already begun procedures to address these issues “as a matter of responsibility”.

Vera also stressed to the Manacor City Council the importance of securing land in Porto Cristo for the construction of a new school that could accommodate students from CEIP ses Comes and reduce pressure on CEIP Mitjà de Mar, which currently operates up to three class groups in some year levels. The aim is to build a two-line school to meet the educational needs of the area.

The minister also visited CEIPs Es Canyar, Jaume Vidal i Alcover, Sa Torre and Molí d’en Xema, meeting with school leadership teams to learn first-hand about their needs and gather proposals to improve conditions in the municipality’s educational centres.
