Mallorca has approved 45 projects submitted by local councils and inter-municipal associations under the 2025 Water Pact grant programme, aimed at improving the efficiency of the integrated water cycle and strengthening drinking water supply systems across the island.

The programme provides €5 million per year, enabling municipalities to receive a total of €35 million throughout the current legislative term to address water losses, upgrade supply networks, and improve the sustainable use of water resources.

The approved initiatives focus mainly on upgrading water distribution networks, increasing water efficiency, and reducing leaks. During the presentation of the grants, it was emphasised that this funding responds to long-standing requests from municipalities facing ageing infrastructure and significant water losses.

Over the first two years of the current term, nearly €25 million has already been allocated to water-related projects, reinforcing the institutional commitment to sustainable water management.

Regarding project types, 47% of the grants will be used for direct improvements to water supply networks, while others are intended for technical project drafting, the construction of reserve wells and storage tanks, and the installation of water meters in several municipalities.

In addition, the Pla de Mallorca inter-municipal association has submitted a project to design the interconnection of water supply networks between several municipalities in the region, with a budget exceeding €320,000, representing a strategic investment to enhance water security.

Grant amounts were allocated through a proportional distribution system based on municipal surface area, population size, and number of population centres, with funding per project ranging from €32,000 to €321,000.

Through this programme, Mallorca is making an unprecedented investment in water infrastructure, providing municipalities with the financial tools needed to improve water management and move towards a more efficient and sustainable model.
