Formentera to take over official slaughterhouse controls under an agreement with the Health authorities

Formentera will take responsibility for carrying out specific official control functions at the island’s slaughterhouse through a management delegation agreement signed with the regional health authorities. The agreement includes a maximum funding allocation of €21,666.66 and will remain in force until 31 December 2027.

The agreement is justified by Formentera’s unique geographical and logistical conditions, which make regular travel by specialised staff from other islands difficult. Double insularity, heavy summer pressure on maritime transport, adverse weather conditions and past mobility restrictions have all contributed to the decision to adopt this management model.

The arrangement is further supported by the positive sanitary record of the Formentera slaughterhouse, where animals slaughtered are locally bred, and no significant health issues have been identified during ante- and post-mortem inspections. In addition, the island has qualified veterinary civil servants with the necessary expertise to perform official controls.

The delegated functions include ante-mortem inspections, ensuring compliance with animal health and welfare requirements before slaughter, and post-mortem inspections, which assess carcasses and offal to confirm that meat is fit for human consumption. The agreement also covers hygiene controls in meat production and the handling of animal by-products, as well as measures related to animal health and welfare.

Controls related to slaughter for personal consumption are excluded from the agreement and, where applicable, will be carried out by qualified local staff under the direct responsibility of the island administration.

The agreement also provides for the establishment of a monitoring committee, made up of representatives from both administrations, to oversee implementation and address any issues that may arise.
