National and regional authorities have renewed their cooperation framework to protect and restore endangered vascular flora at Puig Major, a natural site of high ecological value located on military land where Air Surveillance Squadron No. 7 is based.
The agreement enables the continuation of conservation actions focused on endemic, rare and threatened plant species, many of which are exclusive to this mountain massif. A total of 34 protected or endangered vascular plant species have been identified at Puig Major, highlighting its exceptional botanical significance.
Since the 1950s, the summit of Puig Major and its access road have been owned by the Ministry of Defence, which manages the area under strict environmental protection criteria. These conditions have made the site particularly suitable for long-term conservation programmes, leading both administrations to renew and strengthen their cooperation.

The agreement aims to ensure the continuation of conservation and recovery measures, including reducing grazing pressure, controlling competing vegetation, improving microhabitats and reinforcing the most vulnerable plant populations. Existing herbivore-exclusion fences will also be maintained, allowing in situ recovery of endemic species and long-term monitoring of climate change impacts.
The Ministry of Defence will authorise the activities free of charge and facilitate access for technical teams, in accordance with military safety regulations. The agreement also provides for institutional acknowledgement of the cooperation in publications and outreach materials related to the conservation work.
Implementation will be overseen by a joint committee made up of representatives from both parties, which will meet regularly and may establish specialist technical groups when required. The agreement will initially remain in force for four years, with the option of an extension of up to four additional years, and does not involve any financial commitments for either party.
