The village of Sant Rafel de sa Creu, in Ibiza, is set to recover an important part of its historical heritage through the restoration of the annex buildings of its parish church. The project is being carried out under a collaboration agreement between the Island Council of Ibiza and the Diocese of Ibiza and Formentera, aimed at preserving and enhancing the island’s ecclesiastical heritage.
The restoration works were presented by Sara Ramon, Councillor for Culture, Education and Heritage of the Island Council of Ibiza, together with Vicent Ribas, Bishop of Ibiza, who both highlighted the cultural and historical significance of the initiative.
The intervention will focus mainly on the rehabilitation of the former corrals and other annexe structures, which are currently in poor condition. The project includes structural repairs, the installation of new roofs and the restoration of the “carro dels morts” house, which will be recovered and showcased as a valuable heritage feature. The works will respect traditional architecture and the historical character of the site.

Ibiza promotes the restoration of the annexe buildings of Sant Rafel church through an institutional agreement
The Island Council emphasised that heritage conservation is a key pillar of cultural policy in Ibiza. Ecclesiastical heritage, in particular, represents one of the island’s most significant architectural and landscape assets, as churches have traditionally played a central role in local community life.
The Sant Rafel project forms part of the 2025 ecclesiastical heritage agreement, under which the Island Council of Ibiza has allocated €460,000 for conservation works across the island. Of this amount, €150,000 will be dedicated specifically to the restoration of Sant Rafel’s annex buildings, enabling the recovery of approximately 100 square metres of historic structures and significantly improving the surrounding landscape.
Institutional representatives stressed that such initiatives not only safeguard Ibiza’s cultural identity, but also strengthen its cultural and tourism offering, ensuring that heritage sites are properly preserved and accessible for both residents and visitors.
