The municipality of Ferreries, in Menorca, will recover one of its most emblematic historical landmarks: the former Franciscan convent. This initiative has been made possible through a cooperation agreement between the Ferreries Town Council and the Island Council of Menorca, aimed at preserving and revitalising a building deeply rooted in the town’s social and cultural identity.

The project forms part of the ACD 2022 programme, which focuses on the acquisition and adaptation of emblematic spaces to support sustainability, the green transition and the preservation of the natural environment within the Menorca Biosphere Reserve, funded by the Next Generation EU recovery funds.

The total investment amounts to €350,000, covering the purchase and refurbishment of the building before 31 March 2026. Under the agreement, the Island Council will transfer the funds to the local authority to formalise the acquisition and ensure the property becomes municipal heritage.

Menorca supports the restoration of the Franciscan convent in Ferreries as a new public heritage space. A building with deep social significance

For more than a century, the Franciscan convent has played a key role in the educational, healthcare and social development of Ferreries. Since the arrival of the Franciscan sisters in 1921, the building served as a school, a medical dispensary and a hub for community activities, providing essential services at a time when public infrastructure was limited.

Operating without public or ecclesiastical funding, the sisters offered education, healthcare and social support to generations of residents, contributing significantly to social cohesion and community well-being.

Preserving heritage with a new public purpose

The preservation of the convent represents a tribute to its historical and human legacy, reflecting values such as solidarity and civic commitment that remain part of Ferreries’ collective memory.

Looking ahead, the Town Council plans to give the building a new public function. The ground floor will host the new municipal tourist office, designed as an open and accessible space for both residents and visitors, helping to enhance the town’s social and tourism activity.

Institutional representatives from Menorca have underlined that the project reinforces their commitment to protecting local heritage and promoting initiatives that strengthen the island’s cultural identity, while the local government highlights the importance of adapting historic spaces to present-day community needs.
