The Balearic Government has launched a grant scheme aimed at compensating municipalities for the extraordinary costs incurred during 2025 due to the transport of drinking water by tanker trucks, a service required to ensure water supply during periods of severe drought.
The provisional resolution was published on 31 December in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB) by the Ministry for the Sea and the Water Cycle. The proposal includes grants totalling €528,285.26, corresponding to duly justified expenses submitted by the applicant municipalities. The call has a maximum budget of €700,000, financed through the regional budgets for 2026.
These grants are intended to ease the financial burden borne by local authorities in order to guarantee an essential public service under exceptional water scarcity conditions, particularly in municipalities lacking sufficient own resources or direct access to the main water supply network.

Balearic Government launches over €528,000 in aid to support water tanker transport during 2025
The published resolution is provisional and opens a seven-working-day hearing period, during which municipalities may formally accept the proposed aid or submit objections before the final resolution is approved.
In accordance with the regulatory framework, the grants are awarded under a non-competitive procedure, meaning that all applications meeting the established requirements are eligible for funding. However, some applications have been excluded on strictly technical grounds related to compliance with current regulations.
This funding scheme is part of the Balearic Government’s broader strategy to support municipalities in water management, combining short-term emergency responses with longer-term actions aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of the integrated water cycle.
