Palma’s lyric season welcomes back zarzuela with performances of La corte de Faraón, one of the most popular works of the genre. The production will be staged on 9, 10 and 11 January in the Main Hall, offering audiences a chance to rediscover this classic musical comedy.
This one-act zarzuela, with music by Vicente Lleó and a libretto by Guillermo Perrín and Miguel Palacios, arrives in Mallorca as a joint production by the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao and the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, where it was warmly received by both audiences and critics last year.
Cultural authorities have highlighted the significance of bringing zarzuela back to the stage, as it is a genre deeply rooted in Spain’s theatrical and musical heritage and closely linked to Palma’s cultural history. The choice of this title strengthens the commitment to a diverse, high-quality lyric programme that appeals to audiences of all ages.

Zarzuela returns to Palma with “La corte de Faraón”
The stage direction is by Emilio Sagi, one of Spain’s most renowned theatre directors, while Carlos Aragón will conduct the Academia 1830 Orchestra. The cast features a large group of acclaimed soloists, including several Mallorcan performers, along with the Palma Theatre Choir, conducted by Francesc Bonnín.
The production also stands out for its strong visual impact, thanks to an elaborate set design, carefully crafted lighting and award-winning costumes, creating a colourful and engaging show. More than one hundred professionals, including artists and technical staff, are involved in bringing this large-scale production to the stage.
La corte de Faraón, often described as a cheeky or satirical zarzuela, humorously retells the biblical story of Joseph, sold into slavery and caught up in a series of comic situations, making it a long-standing favourite of the zarzuela repertoire.
