Zarzuela made a successful return to Palma’s cultural programme this weekend, drawing large audiences and positive feedback. Performances of La corte de Faraón, composed by Vicente Lleó, attracted over 2,500 spectators across three shows held on 9, 10 and 11 January, as well as an open dress rehearsal on 7 January.

Audience members praised both the artistic quality and the staging of the production, which stands out for its festive tone, humour and visually striking presentation. The show is a co-production between the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao and the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, remaining true to the lively and popular spirit of the genre.

The project forms part of an ongoing commitment to the revival and promotion of zarzuela, following earlier initiatives aimed at introducing the genre to new performers and audiences.

In late December, zarzuela performances were also taken to IMAS care homes, through specially designed concerts that were warmly welcomed by residents.

The production featured stage direction by Emilio Sagi and musical direction by Carlos Aragón, with a cast combining renowned zarzuela performers and local Mallorcan artists. Music was provided by the Acadèmia 1830 Orchestra and the venue’s resident choir.

The weekend concluded with the Under 35! initiative, which brought younger audiences together after Saturday’s performance, reinforcing the aim of connecting zarzuela with new generations and highlighting its continued relevance.
