Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM), a public body under the Ministry of Housing, Territory and Mobility, has introduced a new railway outreach program with a strong educational and social focus. The initiative aims to raise public awareness of railway history and operations, with particular emphasis on schools, while highlighting the cultural and historical value of rail transport.
The program includes guided visits for educational institutions, along with a range of cultural and community activities open to the general public. To support this initiative, SFM has awarded a dedicated contract to manage and deliver these outreach actions.

SFM launches an educational and cultural program to bring railways closer to the public
A key objective is to showcase the role of the railway in Mallorca’s social and economic development over the past 150 years, marking an anniversary commemorated throughout 2025 and concluding on February 24. The program also provides structured access to railway facilities for educational and interpretive purposes.
Special attention is given to promoting visits to the Railway Museum, inaugurated on November 22 in Son Carrió, as well as SFM’s participation in major public events such as European Mobility Week, the Balearic Islands Day, and similar initiatives.
At the heart of the project is a guided visit program for primary, secondary and vocational training students from across Mallorca. These visits will take place during the school year and follow a pedagogical approach designed to encourage the use of public transport and to explain how the railway system works, including staff roles, infrastructure, and its social importance.
The initiative will also be extended to associations, cultural organizations, senior groups and other interested parties, with the option of organizing cultural train routes during off-peak hours, ensuring compatibility with the railway’s primary role as a public service.
In addition, the program includes the organization of talks, lectures and workshops focusing on railway history, operations and evolution, held regularly and open to all citizens.
The contract has an initial duration of two years, with the possibility of a two-year extension, and a budget of €224,070 (excluding VAT) for the initial period.
Through this program, SFM strengthens its commitment to public transport promotion, education, heritage preservation and responsible public service management, fostering greater public understanding of the railway system.
