The Balearic Islands are moving forward in tackling illegal waste dumping through the launch of an artificial intelligence–based tool aimed at improving environmental monitoring and control across the territory.

The system relies on the automated analysis of territorial and administrative data, combining information on waste management authorisations, sanctioning procedures and geospatial sources such as orthophotos and LIDAR data. This approach enables the identification of irregular patterns and potential unauthorised dumping sites, providing a more accurate and efficient overview of the territory while optimising public resources dedicated to environmental surveillance.

To support the development and validation of this technological solution, the Ministry of Business, Self-Employed and Energy has established a collaboration framework with the technology company Elohawk, SL, allowing the use of public data strictly for project-related purposes. The company will report regularly on the system’s progress and outcomes.

The initiative involves no financial cost for the regional administration and forms part of a broader strategy to promote the use of advanced technologies in sustainability, environmental protection and innovation in public management. The project has an initial duration of six months, with the option to extend it for up to two years.
