The Island Council of Eivissa and the Balearic Women’s Institute (IBDONA) have signed a cooperation agreement that will enable the creation of the island’s first transitional housing unit for women survivors of gender-based violence who are nearing the end of their recovery process.

The agreement was signed by IBDONA Director Cati Salom and the Councillor for Social Welfare, Equality and Family of the Island Council of Eivissa, Carolina Escandell. Under the terms of the agreement, IBDONA will temporarily and free of charge provide a publicly owned housing unit for use as transitional accommodation.

The housing is intended for women who have completed their stay in a shelter and are preparing to move on to permanent housing that will allow them to live independently. When applicable, their children may also be accommodated.

This transitional apartment serves as a complementary step following shelter accommodation and includes continuous support from a specialised technical team. The initial stay may last up to six months and can be extended in successive six-month periods, up to a maximum of two years. During this time, residents receive legal assistance, employment guidance, social support and psychological care for both themselves and their children.

To access the service, applicants must be recognised survivors of gender-based violence, have an Individual Care Plan and have spent sufficient time in a shelter to allow professionals to properly assess their situation. They must also have a level of income that enables them to manage the costs associated with independent living.

The Island Council of Eivissa will be responsible for providing the necessary human, material and financial resources to ensure the effective management of the facility. The agreement will initially be valid for four years, with the option to extend it for up to an additional four years.
