The Mallorca Island Council, in partnership with the Diocese of Mallorca, has completed the restoration of the choir of the parish church in Alaró, a key heritage project that launches the celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of the church’s construction, which began in 1626.
The restoration was funded with €60,000 through the Joint Heritage Commission between both institutions and represents the first major milestone in the programme of cultural and religious events planned throughout 2026.
The choir, made of Venetian stucco and considered unique on the island of Mallorca, has regained its original appearance following six months of specialised conservation work. The results were unveiled during a public event at the church, where the anniversary programme was also presented.
Mallorca Island Council Vice President and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, highlighted the importance of protecting and enhancing historical heritage, stressing that institutional cooperation is essential to preserve unique elements and make them accessible to the public.

The Mallorca Island Council and the Diocese restore the choir of Alaró church to mark the start of its 400th anniversary
Restoration works included thorough cleaning, material reintegration and the recovery of the original colour palette—white, green and violet—based on technical analysis and colour testing. The conservation team, led by Raquel Garduño, also recreated missing tiles from the choir’s base that had been lost over time.
Attendees were able to view before-and-after images comparing the choir’s condition in early 2025 with its current restored state. A new digital guided tour system was also introduced, allowing visitors to access audio, text and visual content via mobile devices. In addition, an audiovisual presentation explained the church’s construction process, built over a 14th-century structure, and the official logo for the 400th anniversary was unveiled.
The anniversary programme is the result of collaboration between the parish, Alaró Town Council and the cultural association Al Rum, with support from the Mallorca Island Council, and will include exhibitions, lectures, an educational cut-out model of the church and a special concert.
