The municipal slaughterhouse of Ciutadella, in Menorca, has undergone a major environmental upgrade with a total investment of €998,645, aimed at modernising facilities and strengthening waste treatment systems in order to reduce environmental impact and ensure more sustainable operations.

The Director General for Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, Fernando Fernández, visited the site today together with Ciutadella councillor Sandra Moll to review the outcome of the works, which were funded by the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment.

During the visit, Fernández highlighted that the investment enables the slaughterhouse to comply with current environmental regulations, improve waste management and move towards a more efficient and environmentally responsible operating model. He also stressed the importance of modern infrastructure to ensure both environmental sustainability and improved working conditions.

Nearly one million euros invested in Menorca to improve the environmental performance of the Ciutadella slaughterhouse

Part of the investment, amounting to €136,379.02, was allocated to upgrading the treatment system for blood and other by-products generated by the slaughterhouse. These residues have a high polluting load if discharged without prior treatment, and the new system significantly reduces their impact on the sewer network and the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

The remaining budget was used to build a new wastewater treatment plant designed to handle effluents generated during the slaughter of various species, including cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and rabbits. The facility includes advanced solid screening, fat separation, biological treatment processes and sludge dewatering, placing the Ciutadella slaughterhouse at an optimal level of environmental compliance.

Fernández emphasised that the Ciutadella slaughterhouse is a strategic facility for the livestock sector in Menorca and across the Balearic Islands. In 2024, a total of 75,773 animals were slaughtered at the site, accounting for 21.26% of all slaughter activity in the archipelago—more than one in every five animals.

The visit also served to assess future investment needs aimed at improving daily performance and economic efficiency, measures that would indirectly benefit the livestock sector as a whole.

Fernández concluded by stating that investing in projects of this kind means investing in the future of the primary sector, ensuring that livestock activity is compatible with environmental sustainability through modern, efficient infrastructure that meets today’s requirements.
