The Consell de Mallorca, in collaboration with the Diocese of Mallorca, has promoted the restoration of the choir of the Alaró parish church, a major heritage intervention that marks the start of the commemorative events for the 400th anniversary of the church’s construction, which began in 1626.
The project was funded with €60,000 through the Joint Heritage Commission shared by both institutions and reflects a strong commitment to preserving and enhancing Mallorca’s historical heritage. Throughout 2026, the municipality of Alaró will host a wide range of cultural and religious events to celebrate this historic milestone.
The restored choir, crafted in Venetian stucco and considered unique on the island, was officially unveiled during a ceremony held at the church, where the full programme of anniversary events was also presented.

The Consell de Mallorca and the Diocese of Mallorca restore the choir of Alaró parish church
The Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Regional Minister for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, stressed that “the Consell de Mallorca is firmly committed to protecting, restoring and promoting the heritage of our towns, as it forms a fundamental part of our collective identity.” She added that the Alaró project “clearly demonstrates how institutional cooperation makes it possible to preserve unique elements while bringing them closer to the public.”
Restoration work lasted six months and included a comprehensive cleaning of the structure, reintegration of damaged materials and recovery of the choir’s original colours. The specialised team, led by conservator Raquel Garduño, employed innovative cleaning techniques and conducted detailed analyses to identify the original white, green and violet tones. New tiles were also produced to replace skirting elements lost over the centuries.
During the presentation, attendees were shown comparative images of the choir’s condition in early 2025 and after restoration. A new digital guided tour system was also introduced, replacing traditional information panels with mobile-accessible content available in text and audio formats, complemented by visual material. The event also featured an audiovisual presentation explaining the construction process of the current church, built over a 14th-century structure, along with the official logo of the 400th anniversary.
The anniversary programme is the result of cooperation between the parish, the Alaró Town Council and the cultural association Al Rum, with the support of the Consell de Mallorca. Planned activities include an exhibition, lectures, a paper cut-out model to “build” the church at home and a special commemorative concert.
Historical background
The earliest documentary reference to the construction of the new church in Alaró dates back to 8 March 1626, when the town’s jurors approved the expansion of the church and agreed to finance the works through an ecclesiastical tax. Shortly afterwards, on 22 March, sculptor Jaume Blanquer arrived in Alaró to define the final design of the building, discarding the initial proposal and introducing a new architectural plan. Blanquer is also known for creating the Corpus Christi altarpiece in Palma Cathedral.
Construction works continued for more than 150 years and were not completed until 1785, with the finishing of the main portal.
