Mallorca has taken centre stage at FITUR, presenting clear evidence of tourism flow control in peak season alongside a strong commitment to smart destination management and innovation.

The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, introduced the Mallorca Smart Destination Platform (Mallorca PID) before an international audience of tourism professionals.

The presentation was attended by Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, the President of SEGITTUR, Enrique Martínez Marín, and Mallorca’s newly appointed Tourism Councillor, Guillem Ginard.

Galmés highlighted that recent tourism data confirm a shift towards a more balanced model, with a slight decrease in visitor numbers during peak summer months and significant growth during traditionally quieter periods such as November and January.

According to the President, these figures demonstrate the effectiveness of policies aimed at responsible tourism development, territorial protection and improved coexistence between residents and visitors.

New Palma–Abu Dhabi direct flight

Within the FITUR agenda, the Consell de Mallorca also held meetings with Etihad Airways, which confirmed the launch of a new direct route between Palma and Abu Dhabi starting in June.

Operating three weekly frequencies, the route will enhance Mallorca’s global connectivity and position Palma Airport as an international hub linking the island with Middle Eastern and Asian destinations.

Mallorca PID: smart tourism management

The Mallorca PID was presented by Tourism Councillor Guillem Ginard, who underlined the role of data, digitalisation and technology in ensuring sustainable tourism growth.

The platform will integrate information from multiple sectors — including mobility, environment and tourism activity — enabling data-driven decision-making, environmental protection and long-term destination sustainability.

The project is built on a collaborative governance model, involving public administrations, municipalities, tourism businesses, local organisations and citizens.

European funding and implementation timeline

Led by the Fundació Turisme Responsable de Mallorca, the project has a total budget of €4.8 million and will be rolled out in several phases, with completion scheduled for June 2026.

The initiative forms part of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union, and is aligned with the national Smart Tourism Destinations strategy promoted by SEGITTUR and the DTI Network.
