The President of the Balearic Government, Margalida Prohens, has confirmed at FITUR the consolidation of a new tourism model for the Illes Balears, focused on controlling visitor flows, social and economic sustainability, innovation, and real seasonality diversification.

Speaking at the International Tourism Fair in Madrid, Prohens highlighted that the Balearic Islands recorded their best low and mid-season performance ever in the domestic market, welcoming 741,000 Spanish visitors between November and March, a 12.5 % year-on-year increase.

Prohens reinforces in FITUR the new tourism model for the Balearic Islands: sustainability, innovation and seasonality control. Fewer visitors in peak season, stronger off-season growth

In 2025, the islands are expected to welcome just over 3.2 million domestic tourists, reflecting a 1.6 % decrease in total arrivals, mainly concentrated in July and August. According to Prohens, this confirms the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing overcrowding during peak months while promoting alternative tourism products.

Higher spending and better tourism profitability

Economic indicators also show positive results. Average daily spending per tourist reached €113.26, representing a 2.2 % increase in 2025 and an 11.2 % rise compared to the previous term, reinforcing a shift towards higher-value tourism.

Smart destination management and innovation

Prohens emphasized advances in smart tourism management, including the sensorisation of 150 beaches across all islands, supported by an investment of €4 million over the next two years.
A digital twin-based application will be launched in the second quarter of the year, offering real-time information on beach occupancy, sea temperature and safety conditions, alongside an open tourism data platform accessible to public authorities, citizens and tourism operators.

Training and professional excellence

Training remains a cornerstone of the new tourism strategy. The President announced the repositioning of the Balearic Islands School of Hospitality (EHIB) on its 30th anniversary, with a renewed brand, updated academic programmes, new university master’s degrees, vocational training courses and international mobility schemes.

Under the slogan “Where culture beats”, the Balearic Government reaffirmed its commitment to combining tourism, culture and sports as key drivers of a more balanced and sustainable tourism model throughout the year.
