The Government of the Balearic Islands has held a series of meetings at FITUR with the main airlines operating in the archipelago, aiming to assess air connectivity needs, promote sustainable aviation and address the specific challenges of an island territory.

The meetings took place on Wednesday and Thursday and were attended by the Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, alongside the Director General for Mobility, Lorena del Valle. Airline representatives included Iberia, Iberia Express, Vueling, Air Europa and Binter.

Discussions focused on improving air connectivity to and within the Balearic Islands, with particular emphasis on winter operations and on Menorca and Ibiza, where double insularity poses additional challenges for residents.

Minister Mateo stressed that ensuring reliable air connectivity is essential for island residents, highlighting the need for “high-quality, sustainable air transport tailored to the real needs of the Balearic Islands”. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining ongoing dialogue with airline operators.

Airlines shared operational data and plans. Iberia Express reported that in 2025, 50% of its flights to the Balearic Islands were operated with A321neo aircraft, which cut emissions by 20%, and that 40% of passengers are island residents. Vueling announced new routes and the consolidation of overnight aircraft bases in Ibiza and Menorca, improving links with Barcelona. Binter explained that it is assessing improvements to routes between the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, while Air Europa outlined key elements of its corporate strategy, reinforcing its role as an airline based in Palma.

The Balearic Government confirmed its commitment to continue holding regular meetings with airlines in order to further enhance air connectivity and sustainability across the islands.
