The Directorate General for Emergencies and Interior of the Balearic Islands Government has decided to keep the PLATERBAL Emergency Plan activated at level 0 in order to supply the municipality of Esporles with all the technical information required to assess the risk situation following recent rock and tree falls in the area.

The Technical Advisory Committee of the PLATERBAL Plan, activated at midday on Friday, met later that afternoon to review the current situation and determine appropriate preventive measures. The meeting included representatives from the Natural Environment Service, specialists from the Balearic Islands Natural Hazards and Emergencies Observatory (RiscBal), the Mallorca Island Council’s Roads Department, the Mayor of Esporles, Josep Ferrà, local police officials, and Mallorca Fire Brigade personnel.

Emergency Services provide Esporles with full technical data to assess rockfall risk

Although no personal injuries have been reported, the main objective of the meeting was to assess existing risks and provide the Esporles Town Council with all available data, enabling it to take informed decisions as the competent authority.

According to an initial technical report presented by RiscBal, the rockfall occurred at the same location as a previous incident. Experts attribute the event to high soil moisture levels—around 22%—resulting from accumulated rainfall over recent weeks and months, which increases the likelihood of further rockfalls or landslides.

Given that this is a recurrent risk area, RiscBal maintains continuous monitoring and has developed extensive hazard mapping. On the same day, additional drone surveys were carried out to measure terrain conditions, assess probable evolution and identify potential risks.

Pending more detailed reports expected in the coming days, several residential properties are considered to be located in potentially hazardous areas. Based on the information received, the Esporles Town Council has decided to recommend the temporary evacuation of at-risk homes, restrict vehicle traffic, and advise against pedestrian access to the affected zone.

These actions are preventive and temporary, and will remain in place until sufficient technical data is available to allow a more precise risk assessment.

The Directorate General for Emergencies and Interior will keep the PLATERBAL Plan activated at level 0 in the coming days to continue providing technical and human support to the municipality.
