The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA) has launched a tender for the supply and installation of sludge pre-treatment and treatment systems at several wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) across the Balearic Islands. The contract, split into 10 lots, has a total budget of €3.148 million (excluding VAT) and is funded by the Sustainable Tourism Tax.

The project covers around 25% of the wastewater treatment plants operated by ABAQUA throughout the archipelago and forms part of the wastewater improvement programme promoted by the Ministry for the Sea and the Water Cycle and the Directorate-General for Water Resources.

ABAQUA tenders €3.1 million project to upgrade sludge treatment at wastewater plants across the Balearic Islands. Island-by-island scope

In Mallorca, the largest investments are planned at the WWTPs of Cala d’Or, Cales de Manacor, Pollença, Algaida, Mancor de la Vall, Sóller, Valldemossa, Camp de Mar and Llucmajor, along with additional equipment upgrades at Santanyí, Cala Ferrera, Andratx, Platja de Muro and Porreres (lots 1 to 7). Key actions include odour control at the Pollença plant, membrane system renewal in Valldemossa, and pre-treatment and screening upgrades in Camp de Mar.

In Menorca, lots 8 and 9 target the Alaior and Ciutadella Sud WWTPs. In Eivissa and Formentera, works focus on upgrading the sludge treatment system at the Formentera WWTP.

Project objectives

These interventions aim to improve sludge management, enhance effluent quality, optimise plant operations, and reduce emissions and waste generation associated with wastewater treatment processes.

The deadline for bid submission is 20 February, and bidders may apply for one or several of the ten lots included in the tender.
