On Wednesday, 5 February, a technical conference entitled “Fisheries, insularity and co-management” will be held at the Aljub of Es Baluard Museum in Palma. The event is organised by the Directorate-General for Fisheries and the IRFAP and will be divided into two sessions.

The morning session will focus on how insularity affects fishing activity, with speakers from European island regions including the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Cyprus, Italy, the Greek islands and Malta. The afternoon session will feature a roundtable discussion on fisheries co-management, moderated by Antoni M. Grau.

Participants will include experts from the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean Advisory Council, WWF Spain, the IMEDEA, and the Balearic Federation of Fishers’ Guilds.

The programme will continue on Thursday, 6 February, with an early-morning visit to Palma’s fish market and a trip to Cala Rajada, where the Commissioner will meet with local fishers and learn about the management of the marine reserve. Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, will also join the delegation.

The visit seeks to position the Balearic fisheries management model as a benchmark for sustainable and participatory governance within the Mediterranean and the European Union.
