Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) will continue its lecture series at the Términus building on Wednesday, 28 January, with a talk entitled “Traditional Society and the Railway: the Mallorcan Case”, delivered by historian and researcher Miguel Deyá.

The lecture will take place at 6:00 p.m., on the ground floor of the Términus building, which currently houses SFM’s headquarters following its recent refurbishment. The event forms part of a lecture programme launched in December to mark the reopening of this historic space.

During the talk, Miguel Deyá will examine the economic, social and cultural impact of the arrival of the railway in Mallorca, highlighting how rail transport reshaped a traditionally structured society. Particular attention will be paid to the integration of the internal market, the boost to exports through the connection with the Port of Palma, and the significant investment efforts required to develop the railway network.

The lecture will also explore lesser-known aspects, such as the cultural and mental impact of the railway, changes in everyday life, and the emergence of new railway-related professions, offering a broader perspective beyond purely economic analysis.

Miguel Deyá holds a PhD in History from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and has an extensive academic and research background in economic and social history.

Through this lecture series, which will continue throughout 2026, SFM aims to reflect on the historical and social evolution of Mallorca, with a particular focus on mobility and the role of rail transport in shaping modern Mallorcan society.

The event is open to the public, with seating available for approximately 50 attendees.
