The Regional Ministry of Education and Universities is moving ahead with the expansion of integrated music studies within the Balearic education system, to strengthen both academic and artistic excellence from the next school year onwards.

As part of this initiative, the Minister for Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, together with the Director General for Vocational Training and Educational Planning, Maria Isabel Salas, visited the Centro Integrado de Enseñanzas Musicales Federico Moreno Torroba in Madrid, a nationally recognised benchmark for integrated music education.

The institutional visit provided an in-depth overview of the centre’s organisational structure, curriculum design and teaching approach, which enable students to combine professional music studies with compulsory secondary education and upper secondary education in a single institution. The delegation was joined by the Madrid Regional Minister for Education, Emilio Viciana, and the school’s director, Óscar Barragán.

Education moves forward with the expansion of integrated music studies in the Balearic education system

The Balearic education authorities highlighted the value of learning from well-established models to develop a framework tailored to the needs of Balearic students, ensuring high-quality musical training alongside a solid general education. As a next step, work will begin on updating the regulatory framework governing integrated music programmes and primary-level integrated music schools.

At present, the Balearic Islands offer several integrated pathways at primary and secondary levels, complemented by recent initiatives in Ibiza and the forthcoming introduction of the programme at the IES Mossèn Alcover. These measures will gradually broaden access to specialised music education across the territory.

The expansion of integrated music education reflects the administration’s commitment to a more flexible, inclusive education system that nurtures artistic talent while ensuring comprehensive academic development.
