The Consell de Mallorca has inaugurated the third edition of the Trobades de Corals de Gent Gran, a sociocultural initiative that promotes choral singing as a space for active participation, social interaction and artistic expression among older adults across the island. Over the course of four days, the event will bring together nearly 700 singers from 23 choirs representing municipalities throughout Mallorca.

The programme, running from 26 to 29 January, includes a series of concerts open to the public in several prominent cultural venues, such as the Peguera Auditorium, the Capdepera Municipal Theatre, the Porreres Auditorium and the church of the Sant Josep Residential Home in Palma. This island-wide itinerary highlights the inclusive and decentralised nature of the initiative.

Organised within the Consell’s Sociocultural Promotion programme, the Trobades de Corals de Gent Gran aim to showcase the musical work carried out by senior choirs throughout the year while establishing choral singing as a regular cultural event across Mallorca. The initiative also strengthens personal commitment, motivation and social relationships through shared musical experiences.

At the opening ceremony, the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, emphasised that these gatherings are the result of listening directly to the needs of older people, who express their desire to continue participating in collective activities and to enjoy music in a social setting. He also noted the steady increase in participation and the firm consolidation of the event within the island’s sociocultural calendar.

The opening concert took place at the Peguera Auditorium, launching a programme that will continue in Capdepera and Porreres before concluding on 29 January in Palma, where the closing event will bring four days of choral performances and intergenerational cultural engagement to an end.
