Balearic Government and Mercadona strengthen public–private cooperation in the commercial sector

The President of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens, has held an institutional meeting with territorial representatives from the External Relations department of Mercadona, as part of the Balearic Government’s ongoing agenda to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with key economic stakeholders operating in the region.

The meeting was attended by the Territorial Director of External Relations for Mercadona in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Jenaro López, together with the Director of External Relations for Mallorca and Ibiza, Bárbara Ordás. Representing the Balearic Government, the Director General for Trade, Maria Antònia Sansó, was also present.

During the meeting, both parties discussed issues of shared interest related to economic development, commercial activity, and public–private cooperation within the Balearic Islands. President Prohens emphasised the importance of maintaining open and constructive communication with strategic companies that play a significant role in job creation and economic growth across the archipelago.

The discussion highlighted the relevance of the retail distribution sector within the broader productive framework of the islands, particularly its capacity to respond to current challenges such as sustainability, logistical efficiency, and the specific demands associated with insular territories. In this regard, the Balearic Government reaffirmed its commitment to providing a stable regulatory and institutional environment that encourages investment, innovation, and competitiveness, while ensuring compliance with environmental and legal standards.

Mercadona’s representatives expressed their willingness to continue collaborating closely with regional institutions, underscoring the value of institutional cooperation in promoting balanced and sustainable commercial development. The exchange of views allowed both sides to reflect on the current evolution of the sector and to consider future challenges in a constructive and cooperative atmosphere.

The Balearic Government positively assessed the outcome of the meeting, stressing that such institutional encounters are essential for strengthening relationships with major economic operators and for gaining first-hand insight into their perspectives, concerns, and proposals. Through ongoing dialogue, the regional administration seeks to align public policies with the realities of the business environment and the needs of Balearic society as a whole.
