The Plenary Session of the Ajuntament d’Inca has approved an institutional declaration in support of the primary sector and in defence of farming in Mallorca, following a proposal promoted by representative organisations of the local agricultural sector. Through this decision, the City Council reaffirms its commitment to a sector that is essential for the territory, the economy and the cultural identity of the island.

The declaration expresses full support for farmers, acknowledging their fundamental role not only as an economic driver but also as custodians of the landscape, food sovereignty, biodiversity and the cultural heritage associated with rural life. The text highlights the serious structural challenges currently facing the sector, worsened by external factors that threaten its viability and hinder the necessary generational renewal.

The document also reflects concern about unfair competition resulting from the importation of products from third countries that do not meet the same sanitary, labour and environmental standards required of local producers. In addition, it underlines the negative impact that the current framework of the Common Agricultural Policy has had on many agricultural holdings across Mallorca.

Through the approved resolutions, the Ajuntament d’Inca calls on the competent authorities to defend the interests of Mallorcan farmers before European institutions, to oppose trade agreements that fail to ensure reciprocal production standards, and to promote compensatory measures to address the reduction in agricultural subsidies, particularly in a context marked by insularity and higher production costs.

Furthermore, the declaration calls for the simplification of administrative procedures and for improved access by professional farmers to public aid and subsidy schemes, intending to ensure the continuity and sustainability of agricultural activity.

With this approval, the Ajuntament d’Inca strengthens its institutional commitment to the protection of the primary sector and to initiatives that contribute to securing a viable and sustainable future for farming in Mallorca.
