The basic training course for Civil Protection volunteers has been launched across the Balearic Islands, representing a key initiative to prepare new members of local volunteer groups and enhance emergency response capacity at the municipal level.

Training has started simultaneously in Menorca and Ibiza, with a total of 52 participants enrolled across both islands. The programme will continue in Mallorca from 7 February and will run until 28 February 2026, ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout the archipelago.

In Menorca, 20 volunteers from the Civil Protection groups of Maó, Ciutadella and Es Mercadal have begun their training, with sessions taking place at the Ciutadella Local Police facilities. In Ibiza, 32 volunteers from Sant Joan de Labritja, Santa Eulària, Sant Josep and Sant Antoni are taking part, together with members from Formentera, who usually travel to Ibiza to attend the course in person but were unable to do so on this occasion due to adverse weather conditions.

Basic training course for Civil Protection volunteers begins across all islands to strengthen emergency preparedness

The opening session included the first training module, which focuses on the core principles of Civil Protection volunteering, the regulatory framework governing their activities, and the identification and classification of municipal risks. This six-hour module provides the foundational knowledge for the rest of the course.

In the coming weeks, the programme will be completed with additional theoretical and practical content aimed at strengthening operational readiness, improving coordination with emergency services, and deepening understanding of response protocols for different risk scenarios.

This basic training establishes a shared knowledge base for new volunteers, ensuring a consistent, effective and safe response throughout the Balearic Islands, always in support of professional emergency services and in service to the community.

The opening session in Ibiza was attended by the Director General for Emergencies and Interior, Pablo Gárriz, who officially opened the course and accompanied the volunteers at the start of their training.

With this new edition of the basic course, the commitment to ongoing training and the reinforcement of Civil Protection volunteer groups is reaffirmed, highlighting the essential role volunteers play in emergency preparedness, response and public safety.
