The Govern de les Illes Balears continues to promote initiatives aimed at strengthening safety, accessibility and overall quality within the public transport system through coordinated work with social organisations, professionals and public authorities. In this context, the Directorate General for Mobility has held the third meeting of the working group on public transport safety and accessibility, providing a structured forum for dialogue and shared proposals.

The meeting, chaired by the Director General for Mobility, Lorena del Valle, brought together around twenty organisations representing transport companies, workers, users and disability advocacy groups, both in person and online. The working group, established within the Consell Balear de Transport Terrestre, was launched in late 2024 to address accessibility and safety improvements across the public transport network in a comprehensive manner.

One of the main items discussed was the set of actions already underway at the Estación Intermodal de Palma, which is undergoing its first comprehensive refurbishment in nearly two decades. The General Manager of the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca, Lluïsa Serra, outlined a series of upgrades designed to enhance user accessibility, safety and comfort. These include the installation of new escalators, refurbished restroom facilities, the introduction of tactile paving, and the creation of a new customer service office. The overall investment amounts to €3.6 million and forms part of the “Illes en transformació” infrastructure programme promoted by the regional government.

Further improvements presented during the meeting included the deployment of new wayfinding and signage technologies adapted for people with visual impairments, as well as upgrades to public address systems. In this regard, it was noted that onboard audio announcements are now available across the entire interurban bus fleet, while Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca is renewing station announcement systems and improving onboard audio in trains and metro services.

The session also addressed awareness-raising and information campaigns on safety and accessibility aimed at both passengers and transport workers, alongside measures and protocols to respond to situations of sexual harassment within the interurban transport network, in coordination with other public bodies.

As in previous meetings, the regional government has committed to taking into account the contributions made by participating organisations and to continuing its efforts to promote public transport not only as a viable alternative to private vehicles, but also as a system that is safer, more accessible and inclusive for all members of society.
