The island president, Llorenç Galmés, has formally submitted the documentation of the new municipal urban development plan to the Town Council of Ariany, enabling the start of the initial approval process. The event was attended by Mayor Joan Ribot and the Island Director for Urban Planning and Municipal Development, Maria José Frau.
The new General Plan maintains the current urban land classification and does not envisage any expansion for residential or tourist uses. Its main contribution lies in the increased allocation of land specifically designated for public infrastructure and municipal services, in line with a sustainable and realistic planning model.
Planned facilities include public car parks, educational and sports facilities, green areas and a new pedestrian connection linking the town centre with the cemetery, the recycling point and the Ses Torres roundabout. A general system of green spaces is also created behind the church to protect the visual impact of surrounding development and preserve the landscape setting of the building.

New urban development plan for Ariany submitted for initial approval, strengthening public infrastructure
The plan reserves land adjacent to the CEIP Guillem Frontera Pascual for future educational and sports facilities and removes certain urban land sections where road infrastructure had been planned but never executed. Technical assessments confirm that the existing undeveloped urban areas are sufficient to accommodate the expected population growth over the next fifteen years, making further urban expansion unnecessary.
Regarding rural land, new protection categories have been introduced, including municipal forest rural land to safeguard woodland areas and a municipal landscape-interest rural zone that restricts building development. In the vicinity of the church, construction is limited to single-storey buildings in order to preserve the townscape and visual prominence of the historic landmark.
The president highlighted that the new plan reflects the institutional commitment to assisting municipalities in updating outdated planning regulations and aligning them with current legal frameworks, noting that the previous regulations dated back to 1981. The plan has been drafted through a technical cooperation programme for municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants and provides a comprehensive urban framework, covering both structural and detailed planning.
The institutional visit also included a tour of the Son Siurana manor house, recently acquired by the Town Council to serve as the future municipal headquarters. The purchase and refurbishment of the building, funded with 857,000 euros, includes improvements in accessibility and climate control. The day concluded with a meeting reviewing public investments in Ariany, which total 5.1 million euros during the current term, allocated to infrastructure, public services, social facilities, sports, culture, tourism, sustainability, water management and road improvements.
