The 112 Emergency Coordination Centre of the Balearic Islands celebrates its 30th anniversary as the central pillar of the archipelago’s emergency response system. Since its launch in February 1996, the service has handled more than 24.5 million calls and coordinated nearly 4 million incidents, demonstrating its strategic role in public safety and civil protection.

In 2025 alone, the centre received 785,093 incoming calls and managed 143,314 incidents, averaging 2,148 calls and 393 coordinated emergencies per day. These figures highlight the operational intensity of the service and its ability to respond to increasingly complex emergency scenarios.

The most common incidents continue to involve medical emergencies—both at home and in public spaces—traffic accidents, domestic incidents and public disturbances. In terms of geographic distribution, Mallorca accounts for 113,159 incidents, followed by Ibiza (21,341), Menorca (7,166) and Formentera (1,618), reflecting population and tourism patterns.

Seasonal demand peaks during the summer months, with July and August each exceeding 90,000 calls. Winter months present comparatively lower, though steady, volumes.

From an efficiency standpoint, 2025 recorded a significant decrease in non-effective calls, which fell to 122,447 compared to 186,416 the previous year. Although total incoming calls declined compared to 2024, managed incidents increased by 7,160, indicating higher operational complexity and greater mobilisation of emergency resources.

A major technological advancement has been the expansion of Advanced Mobile Location (AML), enabling precise geolocation in 71 per cent of calls made from national mobile phones, up from 57 per cent the previous year. This improvement enhances response times and operational accuracy.

Psychosocial emergency support remains a key component of the system. During 2025, emergency psychologists were deployed on 267 occasions to assist victims and families in critical situations.

Three Decades of Innovation and Growth

The 112 Illes Balears service was the first of its kind to be operational in Spain, preceding the nationwide implementation of the single European emergency number. Initially based on Palma’s Paseo Marítimo with a staff of 12 professionals, the center has grown substantially and now operates from its headquarters in El Pinaret (Marratxí), employing around one hundred staff members.

In 2005, the regional government assumed direct management of the service through the creation of the public company Gestió d’Emergències de les Illes Balears (GEIB), marking a structural and technological transformation.

The recent implementation of a new IT management system, supported by an investment of €2.3 million, has further enhanced interoperability among emergency services—including medical response units, fire brigades and police forces—while improving coordination and real-time geolocation capabilities.

Looking ahead, plans are underway to expand and relocate the center to the future Security District, providing larger facilities to accommodate steadily increasing service demands driven by both permanent and seasonal population growth.

After 30 years of uninterrupted service, 112 Illes Balears continues to strengthen its commitment to public safety, technological innovation and operational excellence in emergency management.
