Reading continues to strengthen its position in Spain as one of the most widely practised cultural leisure activities. Data for 2025 point to a steady and sustained increase in reading habits over recent years, with particularly high participation among younger age groups and a growing number of regular readers.

More than two-thirds of the population aged 14 and over report reading books, with the majority doing so for personal enjoyment rather than obligation. This trend confirms that reading is not a marginal activity, but a well-established practice in everyday life for a significant part of Spanish society.

Demographic analysis reveals notable patterns. Women show higher reading rates than men, although participation has increased across both groups. By age, young people lead reading engagement, challenging the widespread belief that new generations are drifting away from books. At the same time, a significant rise has been observed among older adults, whose reading levels have grown considerably in recent years.

Educational attainment remains a key factor influencing reading habits. People with higher education display the strongest engagement, while encouraging progress is also evident among those with secondary and primary education. This broad-based growth reflects an expansion of cultural access and interest across social groups.

Regarding formats, digital reading remains firmly established, supported by e-readers and mobile devices. Audiobooks continue to gain popularity as well, particularly among younger audiences, contributing to a more diverse and flexible reading ecosystem.

Book purchasing trends are also positive, with over half of the population buying at least one book during the year. Physical bookstores retain their role as essential cultural spaces, complemented by online sales channels. Library attendance has likewise continued to rise, nearing pre-pandemic levels and maintaining high user satisfaction.

Overall, the figures portray a favorable outlook for reading in Spain, pointing to a more inclusive, dynamic and socially embedded reading culture, while highlighting the need to keep working towards engaging those who have yet to adopt reading as a regular habit.
