The public health system of the Balearic Islands has formalised a cooperation agreement with the Fundación Josep Carreras to reinforce joint efforts in the fight against leukaemia and to improve care for patients requiring haematopoietic stem cell transplants. The agreement has a total budget of €3,697,600 and an expected duration of four years.

The authorisation of the agreement enables the Servicio de Salud de las Illes Balears to actively contribute to the development and consolidation of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry, which is managed by the Josep Carreras Foundation and officially recognised at the national level. This registry plays a crucial role in providing transplant options for patients who do not have a compatible family donor.

The main objective of the agreement is to enhance the quality and equity of healthcare for residents of the Balearic Islands who require a transplant of blood stem cells. To achieve this, the initiative promotes voluntary donation of haematopoietic progenitors throughout the archipelago and strengthens donor identification and assessment processes.

Under the terms of the agreement, histocompatibility laboratories within the public health system will be used to perform HLA typing of donor candidates, as well as to register and manage personal and clinical data related to donation. The Hospital Universitario Son Espases will act as the reference centre responsible for carrying out HLA typing, compatibility studies and other complementary analyses.

Through this collaboration, the Balearic health system reinforces an institutional partnership model aimed at increasing donor availability, optimising clinical procedures and improving treatment opportunities for patients with leukaemia and other serious haematological conditions.
