The Consell de Mallorca will hold a blood donation campaign on Monday, February 16, at the Palau del Consell, strengthening its commitment to public health and community solidarity in the Balearic Islands. Organised in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Blood and Tissue Bank Foundation, the initiative will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and marks the second consecutive year that the institution has opened its headquarters for this purpose.

By hosting the campaign at its official premises, the island council aims to facilitate citizen participation and promote voluntary blood donation as a fundamental act of social responsibility. The initiative follows previous solidarity actions carried out over the past year, reinforcing the Palau del Consell as a space dedicated not only to governance but also to community engagement and life-saving initiatives.

Current blood reserves in the Balearic Islands stand at approximately 55% of medical requirements, with particular shortages in A+, A-, O+, and O- blood groups. This situation highlights the urgent need to increase donations to ensure the continuity of hospital treatments and surgical procedures.

Around 200 blood donations are required daily across the archipelago. Each donation consists of 450 millilitres of blood, which is later separated into platelets, red blood cells, and plasma. Through this process, a single donation can potentially save up to three lives. Approximately 60% of transfusions are allocated to oncology patients, 34% to surgical interventions, 3% to pediatric care, and the remaining 3% to gynaecology and obstetrics.

Individuals wishing to take part must register in advance through the designated online link. Eligibility requirements include being over 18 years of age, weighing more than 50 kilograms, and being in good health. The entire procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, with only five to ten minutes dedicated to the actual blood extraction. Donors are also able to access their blood test results a few days after the donation.

Through this campaign, the Consell de Mallorca reaffirms its dedication to promoting voluntary blood donation, strengthening healthcare resources, and supporting the well-being of residents throughout the Balearic Islands.
