The Consell de Mallorca, through the Teatre Principal de Palma, presents a landmark event in its operatic history by staging, for the first time, an opera by Richard Wagner. As part of the 40th opera season, The Flying Dutchman will be performed in the Main Hall on February 18 and 20 at 8:00 p.m., and on February 22 at 6:00 p.m.
This production represents a significant milestone for the Teatre Principal, which until now had only programmed Wagner’s works in concert format. The move to a fully staged Wagner opera reflects the artistic maturity and growing ambition of the institution’s operatic programming.

Wagner arrives at Palma’s Teatre Principal with an international production of The Flying Dutchman
Originally produced by the Municipal Theatre of Santiago de Chile, the staging arrives in Palma under the musical direction of Guillermo García-Calvo, with stage revival direction by Àngela Boveri. The production stands out for its strong visual identity, supported by a carefully designed set, precise lighting, and elegant, realistic costumes.
The cast brings together internationally acclaimed soloists alongside national and local talent, supported by the Teatre Principal Choir and the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands, both specially reinforced for this occasion.
Composed between 1840 and 1841, The Flying Dutchman is widely regarded as a turning point in Wagner’s career, marking the beginning of his artistic maturity. The opera explores themes of redemption, fate, and eternal devotion through the story of a cursed sailor condemned to wander the seas, who can only be freed through the power of true love.
