The President of the regional executive, Margalida Prohens, has presented the roadmap for the progressive implementation of the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) across the rail and metro network operated by Servicios Ferroviarios de Mallorca. The project represents a total investment of more than €51 million and aims to significantly improve service safety, reliability and operational efficiency.
The presentation took place at Palma’s intermodal station, where the deployment officially began with the installation of the first system balise. The event was attended by the Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, the Director General for Mobility, Lorena del Valle, the Managing Director of SFM, José Ramón Orta, and representatives of the companies involved in the project.

Prohens Unveils the Rollout of the ERTMS System to Enhance Safety and Modernise the Train and Metro Network
The introduction of ERTMS marks a decisive step in the modernisation of the rail system. As Europe’s benchmark technology for train supervision, signalling and speed control, it enables continuous communication between track infrastructure, rolling stock and the control centre, ensuring constant monitoring of operations and significantly reducing risks related to human error.
Over the past two years, investment in safety and maintenance has increased substantially, reaching nearly €120 million. This has made it possible to address long-standing deficiencies and strengthen both infrastructure and rolling stock.
The rollout will be carried out in stages. The first phase is currently underway on the metro network and is expected to be completed by March 2027. The system will then be extended to the rest of the railway lines, with full deployment scheduled for completion in the final months of 2028. This phased approach will ensure service continuity and a smooth transition to the new technological framework.
The project includes upgrades to trackside equipment, adaptations to rolling stock and the commissioning of a dedicated control centre. Several specialised companies are involved, including a joint venture formed by CAF, Electrans and Hitachi Rail, along with other contractors responsible for technical assistance and onboard system installation.
Through this initiative, SFM reinforces its commitment to continuous improvement of public transport, placing safety at the core of its strategy and consolidating a more reliable, efficient and future-ready mobility model.
