Mallorca has officially launched the new East Mallorca GR 226 hiking route, a long-distance trail connecting five municipalities in the eastern part of the island: Artà, Capdepera, Manacor, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar and Son Servera. This new route strengthens institutional efforts to protect natural landscapes, preserve traditional paths and promote sustainable and responsible tourism.

The inauguration took place at the starting point of the trail in Cala Agulla and included a symbolic walk led by the second vice-president and head of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, accompanied by senior officials from the areas of sports, environment and tourism, as well as local representatives from the municipalities along the route. Nearly one hundred senior citizens took part in the event.

During the ceremony, Bestard highlighted the strategic value of the GR 226, emphasising its role in expanding Mallorca’s long-distance hiking network and its contribution to encouraging physical activity, environmental awareness and a deeper understanding of the island’s territory.

The inaugural walk included participants from the “Mou-te!” physical activity groups for older adults, who regularly take part in sports programs across several municipalities. The group completed a six-kilometre walk to La Taconera Hotel, where the activity concluded with a stretching session.

The East Mallorca GR 226 route covers a total distance of 100.48 kilometres. Its main itinerary is divided into four stages totalling 89.62 kilometres, complemented by two access routes measuring 10.86 kilometres. The trail has a low level of difficulty, making it suitable for a wide range of users.

With its official designation as GR 226, this route joins the island’s major long-distance hiking trails, contributing to the development of a comprehensive network that will reach 585 kilometres once all planned projects are fully implemented.
