The Bomberos de Mallorca and the Servicio de Emergencias Sanitarias 061 have launched a joint initiative aimed at improving coordination and operational efficiency in mountain rescue operations, through the operational integration of medical personnel into the Mountain Rescue Group (GRM).

This action forms part of the cooperation agreement between both emergency services and seeks to enhance specialised medical care during rescues in hard-to-reach areas, ensuring faster, safer and more effective responses in complex natural environments.

The first stage of the process involved a physical endurance test conducted in a natural setting, with the participation of medical professionals from the 061 organised into several groups. The assessment was overseen by a technical panel and supported by members of the GRM, ensuring rigorous and standardised evaluation criteria consistent with mountain rescue requirements.

The route covered the area between Biniaraix and the Cúber Refuge and included preventive aerial support, aimed at reinforcing safety throughout the exercise. This test represents the first of three evaluations planned within the qualification process. Upcoming phases include a climbing assessment focused on rocky terrain skills and a technical test involving rope progression and specialised rescue manoeuvres.

The Minister for Finance, Innovation and Public Administration, Rafel Bosch, highlighted that this initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening coordination between emergency services, emphasising that the integration of medical personnel into the GRM enables a more specialised and effective response in demanding rescue scenarios.

Similarly, the Island Director of Emergencies, Joan Fornàs, stressed that mountain rescues require absolute coordination and a high level of expertise. He noted that the qualification process ensures that medical staff joining the GRM meet the necessary physical and technical standards, and that this collaborative model directly improves emergency medical care for the public.

This initiative reinforces a comprehensive emergency response model based on joint training, institutional cooperation and professional specialisation, essential elements for delivering a modern, efficient and safety-focused rescue system.
