The Consell Insular de Menorca has once again urged the Spanish Government to move forward with the immediate construction of a new physical control tower at the island’s airport, following the definitive abandonment of the virtual control tower project that had been under consideration in recent years.

The island institution considers that the cancellation of the virtual tower brings to an end a prolonged period of uncertainty that has significantly delayed a strategic investment for Menorca. After years of development and substantial financial expenditure without achieving operational results, the Consell maintains that the only effective solution is the replacement of the current facility with a conventional control tower designed to meet the airport’s real operational needs.

The president of the Consell Insular, Adolfo Vilafranca, has emphasised that the existing control tower dates back to 1968 and that airport planning documents had already identified, more than a decade ago, the need to replace an infrastructure that had reached the end of its useful life. According to the president, continued delays have only postponed an essential

project and increased the urgency of its execution.

Menorca calls for the urgent construction of a new physical control tower at its airport

The Council highlights that the current tower presents structural and technical shortcomings that fall short of the standards required for a modern airport. This situation has direct implications for operational safety, working conditions, and the overall performance of a key transport infrastructure that is vital for the island’s connectivity and the mobility of its residents.

In addition, the island government points out that the current economic context leaves no room for further postponement. Increased public revenues and access to European funding remove any budgetary obstacles to advancing an investment considered essential for Menorca’s general interest.

The Consell Insular therefore calls for institutional responsibility and decisive action to address a long-standing demand of the island, ensuring the construction of a new physical control tower that strengthens safety, efficiency, and reliability at Aeropuerto de Menorca.
