The doctors’ strike has forced the Balearic Islands Health Service to suspend a total of 20,046 healthcare procedures this week, including surgeries, hospital consultations, diagnostic tests and primary care appointments. The disruption affects all islands and is directly linked to the strike action against the reform of the statutory framework proposed by Spain’s Ministry of Health.

According to official data, the Balearic Health Service has confirmed that all cancelled activities will be rescheduled, aiming to limit the impact on patients across the public healthcare system.

Widespread disruption across healthcare services

The suspended activity spans all levels of care. In total, 435 surgical operations have been cancelled, along with 11,281 hospital consultations and diagnostic or radiological tests, and 8,330 primary care appointments.

Mallorca accounts for the largest share of cancellations, followed by the Pitiusas and Menorca, affecting both hospital-based services and primary care.

Breakdown of cancelled procedures by island

In surgical activity, 278 operations were suspended in Mallorca, 53 in Menorca and 104 in the Pitiusas.
Hospital consultations and diagnostic tests reached 9,272 cancellations in Mallorca, 899 in Menorca and 1,154 in the Pitiusas.
Primary care saw 6,354 cancelled appointments in Mallorca, 515 in Menorca and 1,461 in the Pitiusas.

Rescheduling and waiting list impact

The Balearic Islands Health Service has warned that rescheduling this volume of activity will lead to a slight increase in waiting lists for surgeries, consultations and diagnostic tests.

Health authorities state that efforts are focused on reorganising services to reduce inconvenience for patients once strike action concludes.
