The celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Mallorca’s first railway line reach their conclusion this Saturday with a full day of public events combining live music, family activities and artistic tributes to the island’s railway heritage. Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) has unveiled the closing programme, set to take place in Inca and Palma, with a live concert by Nacha Pop as the highlight of the day.

The final events are designed to strengthen the connection between the railway and the public, commemorating the arrival of the train in Mallorca in 1875 and its decisive role in the island’s economic, social and cultural development.

A commemorative artwork capturing 150 years of railway evolution

As part of the anniversary, SFM commissioned artist Xisco Fuentes to create an exclusive commemorative print. Produced using gouache on Arches paper and characterised by a realistic style, the artwork reflects three key phases in the evolution of rail transport in Mallorca — steam, diesel and electric traction — and includes a reference to the Términus building, now SFM’s headquarters.

The piece serves as a symbolic summary of the anniversary and a visual tribute to a transport system that has shaped everyday life on the island for a century and a half.

Morning events in Inca and an evening finale in Palma

Activities will begin in Inca from 10.00 a.m. in Antoni Fluxà square, with workshops, children’s entertainment and live music performances by Tardes en el Café and DJ Alfabetagamma, organised in collaboration with the local councils of Inca and Palma.

The programme will then move to Palma from 5.00 p.m., at the entrance to Parc de les Estacions from Plaça d’Espanya, near the pergola area. This session will include the award ceremony for the photography and drawing competitions held as part of the anniversary, with the winning works later displayed in the metro platforms of the Intermodal station.

The day’s central event will be the Nacha Pop concert, scheduled for around 6.00 p.m. near the Intermodal station, bringing a musical close to a programme focused on culture, history and public participation.

Institutional presence and a lasting legacy

The closing events will be attended by the Regional Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, the Secretary General of the department, Margarita Coll, and the Managing Director of SFM, José Ramón Orta.

The anniversary commemorates the first railway journey in Mallorca, completed on 24 February 1875 between Palma and Inca using the steam locomotive Nasmith Wilson, operated by the Company of the Railways of Mallorca. This line remains the only one on the island to have operated continuously since the 19th century.

Over the past year, the Balearic Government and SFM have organised a wide-ranging programme of commemorative activities, including the travelling exhibition 150 Years of the Railway in Mallorca, first launched at the Intermodal station and later shown in towns such as Inca, sa Pobla, Manacor, Sineu, Lloseta, Llucmajor and Sant Llorenç, alongside talks and public lectures across the island.
