The Ministry of Labour, Public Service and Social Dialogue, through the Instituto Balear de Seguridad y Salud Laboral, has initiated an investigation following a serious workplace accident that occurred on Thursday at Port d’Andratx, where a worker was injured after becoming trapped beneath several heavy-duty pipes.

On the same day as the incident, two IBASSAL technicians travelled immediately to the site to collect initial information, carry out the required photographic documentation and assess the preliminary circumstances surrounding the accident. The inspection took place shortly after the injured worker had been evacuated, in a situation marked by heightened tension.

According to information gathered during the initial on-site assessment, the worker was not handling the pipes at the time of the incident but was moving through the area when the stacked materials collapsed, the cause of which remains under investigation. The pipes, each weighing approximately 480 kilograms, rolled and trapped the worker’s lower limbs, requiring the use of machinery to free him.

IBASSAL has activated the mandatory investigative procedure to clarify the sequence of events, identify contributing factors, and accurately determine the causes of the accident. Once the investigation is completed, a technical report will be produced and forwarded to the Labour Inspectorate.

Initial medical assessments indicate that the worker sustained fractures to his legs. He remains hospitalised at Mutua Balear and is reported to be in a stable condition and out of danger.
