The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU), through the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), has launched the “Astronaut for a Day” programme, a strategic initiative designed to foster scientific and technological vocations, stimulate interest in space sciences and technologies, and bring the space experience closer to society, particularly to young people.

This pioneering national programme is aimed at students aged between 16 and 22 and offers up to 30 places. Of these, up to 25 are allocated to first- and second-year upper secondary students enrolled in the Spanish education system, while up to 5 places are reserved for Spanish students pursuing official university STEM degrees within the Spanish university system.

Selected participants will take part in a specialised training day culminating in a parabolic flight under microgravity conditions on 5 and 6 May 2026 at San Javier Air Base (Murcia). Through controlled parabolic trajectories, the aircraft generates brief periods of weightlessness comparable to those experienced in space, providing a hands-on introduction to space research and exploration.

Beyond the technical experience, the programme includes a strong outreach component. Participants will be appointed Space Ambassadors of the Spanish Space Agency for one year, engaging in science communication and awareness-raising activities aimed at encouraging STEM careers among young audiences and strengthening scientific culture within society.

Given the aeronautical nature of the activity, applicants must complete the required medical examinations as part of the eligibility criteria.

Application Process and Selection Phases

Online registration will be open from 3 March to 16 March via the official Spanish Space Agency website. Eligible applications will undergo a multi-stage evaluation process, including academic record assessment, review of motivation and interest in the space sector, evaluation of the proposed ambassadorial contribution, and mandatory medical clearance.

“Astronaut for a Day” represents not only a high-impact educational experience but also a key action within the National Space Strategy, reinforcing Spain’s commitment to nurturing young talent, advancing innovation, and strengthening scientific leadership.

As part of the programme’s launch, the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, shared an institutional message encouraging participation, joined by European Space Agency astronauts Pablo Álvarez and Matthias Maurer, highlighting the unique and transformative nature of this opportunity.
