Balearic local products attract strong interest from the German press at the opening of ITB Berlin
For the second consecutive year, the regional government has established its own gastronomic and wine promotion area within the ITB Berlin exhibition. This space has been designed as an international showcase for the Balearic primary sector and for the culinary heritage linked to the islands. Throughout the three days of the fair, four tasting sessions are organised daily, presenting products from Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera in order to strengthen the international visibility of the archipelago’s agri-food sector.
The first two sessions of the program were dedicated exclusively to German journalists specialising in gastronomy, tourism and food. During these presentations, members of the press showed particular interest in aspects such as product origin, production methods and traceability, reflecting the growing importance of quality and authenticity in international food markets.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, accompanied by the Director General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Products, Joan Llabrés, toured the exhibition space and emphasised the essential role played by farmers, livestock producers and fishermen in maintaining the landscape and productive heritage of the islands. According to the minister, local products represent both tradition and economic opportunity for the Balearic primary sector.
During this first day dedicated to the media, German professionals had the opportunity to taste several dishes prepared with representative ingredients from the islands. The menu included dishes such as dida meat with Menorcan beef, safarnàries from Mallorca and honey from Ibiza; burballes pasta with Ibizan chicken, Menorcan cheese and eggs from Mallorca; beans with black pork and sobrasada from Mallorca combined with Ibizan herbs; and the traditional bescuit from Formentera served with brossat cheese from Menorca and peanuts from Mallorca.
The tasting sessions were prepared by Mallorcan chef Miquel Calent, while the wine pairings were selected by German sommelier David Schwarzwälder, a specialist in wines from the Balearic Islands. Each dish was accompanied by wines from different protected designations of origin and geographical indications across the archipelago, showcasing the diversity and quality of the Balearic wine sector.
According to the Director General Joan Llabrés, the German market places particular value on authenticity, quality and traceability in food production. These characteristics align closely with the productive model of the Balearic Islands and help explain the strong interest shown by specialised media attending the event.
The Gastro Space will continue hosting four daily tasting sessions throughout the three days of ITB Berlin, open to tourism professionals with prior reservation. The initiative has become an important platform within the regional government’s strategy to promote Balearic local products internationally and to strengthen the visibility of the archipelago’s agri-food sector.
